ENC Sounding Checker
UKHO NAVWARNING (Number: 037/10 Type: NAVAREA)In February 2010 the UKHO issued a NAVWARNING (Number: 037/10 Type: NAVAREA) regarding the fact that many ECDIS systems will not detect shoal depths encoded using the EXPSOU attribute with the value 2 (i.e. shoaler than range of depth of the surrounding depth area). As a response to this warning SevenCs have created the ENC Sounding Checker that can be used by data producers to batch check their ENCs.
ENC Sounding Checker is a simple command line tool for MS Windows Operating Systems. It can be used to parse a single ENC (S-57 or SevenCs SENC) or multiple ENCs (if operated in batch mode) and check if there are soundings that are shallower than surrounding areas with depths attribution. ENC Sounding Checker does not modify your ENCs at all. The affected features are reported and can be written to a log file. The log files can either:
- be used as a manual reference for updating ENCs, or - imported in SevenCs ENC Designer software.
ENC Sounding Checker is free of charge. Click here to download your copy.

Bathymetric ENCs in SeeMyENCWhilst regular ENCs comply with the relevant standards for ENC production and quality control, the bathymetry is normally only low resolution data. Therefore, SevenCs have created the concept of a bathymetric ENC (bENC); an S-57 data product that can be created using SevenCs tools from common formats of digital bathymetry and then displayed either on its own or in conjunction with a normal ENC for applications, such as dredging and piloting, that demand high resolution data.
A bENC example is included in your SeeMyENC version. You'll find it in the directory /data/examples. ![]() |
